how light works:
Light isn't just made up of a single colour. White light is made up of 7 different colours. When those colours are reflected off of an object, the object appears to be white. The seven colours, and their order, can be remembered by the acronym Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain - which indicates the colours Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet .
The video below talks about lighting, and what changing the coloured filters shone on an object can do. It also shows you that visual light is ADDITIVE and how the complementary colours in visible light are different to those when using and mixing paint.
